- [Lewis Hyde](http://www.archive-project.com/product/lewis-hyde/) - Lewis Hyde is a poet, essayist, translator, and cultural critic with a particular interest in the public life of the imagination. His 1983 book, The Gift, illuminates and defends the non-commercial portion of artistic practice. Trickster Makes This World (1998) uses a group of ancient myths to argue for the kind of disruptive intelligence all cultures need if they are to remain lively, flexible, and open to change. Hyde's most recent book, Common as Air, is a spirited defense of our "cultural commons," that vast store of ideas, inventions, and works of art that we have inherited from the past and continue to enrich in the present. He is currently at work on A Primer for Forgetting, an exploration of the situations in which forgetfulness is more useful than memory. A MacArthur Fellow and former director of undergraduate creative writing at Harvard University, Hyde recently retired from teaching during the fall semesters at Kenyon College, where he was the Richard L. Thomas Professor of Creative Writing. He lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

- [Witold Rybczynski](http://www.archive-project.com/product/witold-rybczynski/) - Witold Rybczynski was born in Edinburgh, of Polish parentage, raised in London, and attended Jesuit schools in England and Canada. He studied architecture at McGill University in Montreal, where he also taught for twenty years. He is Emeritus Professor of Urbanism at the University of Pennsylvania. Rybczynski has designed and built houses as a registered architect, as well as doing practical experiments in low-cost housing, which took him to Mexico, Nigeria, India, the Philippines, and China. He has written for the Atlantic, New Yorker, New York Review of Books, and the New York Times, and has been architecture critic for Saturday Night, Wigwag, and Slate. From 2004 to 2012 he served on the U. S. Commission of Fine Arts.

She completed an MA with distinction in Design History at the Royal College of Art and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, where she researched architectural representation in the 1970s. Mariah worked as the curator at the Museum of Craft and Design, San Francisco, (2009 – 2011) and the Director of the J.B. Blunk Residency (2007 – 2011). She currently manages the J.B. - [Marianne Lettieri](http://www.archive-project.com/product/marianne-lettieri/) - Marianne Lettieri is a visual artist whose mixed media constructions investigate shifts in individual and cultural values associated with everyday objects and discarded materials. She is especially interested in the process by which relics of the past illuminate and inform contemporary social and political contexts. She presents commonplace artifacts in new configurations, reinforcing the interconnectedness of people and communities through time and the shared human desire to remember. After earning a BFA at University of Florida with majors in drawing and printmaking, Lettieri worked as a commercial artist and modern dancer, eventually relocating to Silicon Valley to pursue a career in marketing communications for the technology industry while continuing to develop her art skills. In 2013, Lettieri received an MFA in spatial arts at San Jose State University. She is currently an artist-in-residence at Cubberley Artist Studios Program in Palo Alto, California.

Frieling came to SFMOMA in 2006 from the Center for Art and Media (ZKM) in Karlsruhe, Germany. - [Timothy Buckwalter](http://www.archive-project.com/product/timothy-buckwalter/) - For the past 25 years, appropriation and mimesis artist Timothy Buckwalter has been remixing found imagery to produce works that explore the echoing of effigies through time -- how images and ideals from the past are still present and active today. Originally from Pennsylvania, Timothy Buckwalter (born 1966) now lives and works in the San Francisco Bay Area. He graduated with honors from Philadelphia’s Tyler School of Art in 1988. While in art school he was in an incredibly unpopular noise band, and co-organized with Robert Curcio (of Pulse Art Fair fame) their college’s first performance art events. After a brief stint answering phone queries and responding to complaints about art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, he sold his record collection and moved to California. In 2006, after a conversation with Dan Golden about alternatives to the gallery system, Timothy spent the bulk of the year making more than 700 drawings, selling them online through a hugely-popular curated weekly exhibition. His paintings are in numerous corporate collections as well as the holdings of the Oakland Museum of California. Over the last decade, Buckwalter has organized exhibitions online – including Eyebeam’s Add-Art project and SFMOMA’s OpenSpace – as well as in the physical world. He is currently the gallery director of NIAD Art Center, a contemporary studio arts program that assists adult artists with disabilities. He is married to author and journalist Nell Bernstein.

Frock’s practice interrogates the intersection of art, daily life and popular culture through a consideration of art in public spaces. Invisible Venue, the curatorial enterprise founded and directed by Frock since 2005, collaborates with artists to present art in unexpected settings. Recent projects include Here and Now, a series of interventions in historic architecture, organized by Mills Art Museum. - [Jonn Herschend](http://www.archive-project.com/product/jonn-herschend/) - Raised in a midwestern amusement park, Jonn Herschend is an interdisciplinary artist, filmmaker and experimental publisher whose work explores fiction, reality and the narrative structures that we employ as a way to explain the chaos and clutter of our everyday lives. His videos, performances, installations, and photos all incorporate sterile and formally recognizable structures such as PowerPoint presentations, academic lectures, photographic evidence, infomercials, gallery exhibitions, or educational videos. He uses these structures as a means to investigate the issues of truth and confusion, and allows the messiness of reality to eventually collapse the whole piece. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally including Den Frie Contemporary Art Center in Copenhagen, Denmark; Diverse Works, Houston Texas; the Pacific Film Archive, Berkeley; SITE Santa Fe, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts The Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. - [Archena Horsting](http://www.archive-project.com/product/archena-horsting/) - Archena Horsting is an artist, Executive Director and Co-Founder of Kala Art Institute. Born in Chicago she moved to California at the age of 10. Horsting was exposed to the arts from her mother who taught sculpture at UC Davis. In her final year of school at UC Santa Cruz, Horsting traveled extensively and while in Paris, she took an apprenticeship at Atelier 17, a studio founded in the 1920’s by Stanley William Hayter. It is here she met Yuzo Nakano. In April of 1974, Nakano and Horsting founded Kala which originally was named Wilmot Street Studios and emerged from a hand-built table, homemade hotplate and a single press situated in a garage studio in San Francisco. Horsting’s 40+ years of devotion to the arts has culminated community and provided a foundation that nurtures the creative thought and the facilities for the making and presentation of work.

She grew up in Montréal, graduated from Concordia University in 1998, then moved to the Bay Area to complete her Masters in Fine Art at the San Francisco Art Institute, (2005). She is part of numerous private and public collections and is the recipient of The Canada Council For The Arts Grant and the Irene Pijoan Memorial Award for Painting. Davis contributes Titian Nymph and Shepherd by Andreadakis, Katya Berger and John Berger This book is first a dialogue between a daughter and a father about life, physical sensation, mortality. Both seem to listen to the other with great attention. Secondly it is the extraordinary vehicle for a series of insights into the everyday life and the art of the great Venetian master, following an uncanny incident at the large exhibition of his work staged in Venice in 1990. While attending the exhibition Katya meets an old man, who she becomes convinced can only be the ghost of the great painter. Her ‘spiritual’ visitor engages her in conversation about the minute particularities of painting some of the pictures there. She shares this experience with her father in a letter. He accepts the encounter at face value and discusses the historical background to the old man’s remarks, seeking answers to a series of evidential questions about his daughter’s encounter. From then on, the three of them, the old painter, the daughter, and the father discuss animals, Greece, fur, sexuality, the strangeness of drawing. www.meldavisstudio.com
- [Jon Kuzmich](http://www.archive-project.com/product/jon-kuzmich/) - Jon Kuzmich is an artist, creating labor and process-intensive visual systems that involve the conceptually driven organization of small, synthetic units into large and complex patterns. Kuzmich’s work is often inspired by the fact that our perception as human beings is altered and distorted by our belief in systems that we create (religious, economic, scientific, etc.). By virtue of this distortion, systems change our relationship to the world, manipulate our understanding of reality and influence our relationship to the cosmos. In essence, our belief systems keep us confined within a synthetic, human-created world. Utilizing Op-art, abstraction and conceptual art, Kuzmich considers his work to be representational due to the visual systems and the altered perception of the viewer that illustrates what we see and what we know are questionable.
- [Tommy Noonan](http://www.archive-project.com/product/tommy-noonan/) - Tommy Noonan is currently based between Berlin, Germany and Saxapahaw, NC (USA) as a freelance director and performer. His work has been presented extensively throughout Germany, France, Portugal, Poland, Switzerland, Austria, Spain and Mexico. In 2008 he was a finalist for the Rolex Mentor and Protogé Arts Initiative in the field of Dance; in 2009 he was a contributor to Forum PRISMA in Mexico City. Tommy has written texts for publication in Revisita Obscena (Portugal) and Freies Theater Journal (Austria) and the Performance Journal (New York City). His lecture: “Disorganized Organization”, was given in Istanbul for Team Network’s 2008 symposium on cultural management, with support from the Goethe Institute. Tommy has collaborated as a performer together with Grayson Millwood and Gavin Webber in the creation of “Food Chain”, which premiered in Australia’s Sydney Festival in January 2011 as well as with with Dennis Deter and Tom Schneider. Consisting of tiny dot placed on the canvas with the end of a chopstick, Paulini’s paintings, she writes, are “a continuation of my decade-long exploration of the tension between movement and stillness, growth and decay, harmony and chaos.” Paulini’s works have been exhibited at Eleanor Harwood Gallery, Headlands Center for the Arts, Kala Art Institue and Cerrito Contemporary. With her newly published book Burning Down the House Bernstein introduces us to youth who have suffered violence and psychological torture at the hands of the state. - [Nathan Lynch](http://www.archive-project.com/product/c-jacqueline-wood/) - Nathan Lynch was raised in Pasco, Washington an agricultural community in the shadow of Hanford Nuclear Power Plant. The futility of this environmental contradiction gave Lynch an acute sense of location and deep appreciation for irony. In the five formative years after graduation Lynch worked as the prop master for a local community theatre, the effects of which are still being realized in his current body of work. His concerns for political conflict and environmental upheaval are filtered through notions of absurdity, hand fabrication and the dramatic devices of storytelling. As a sculptor and performance artist, Lynch has made collaboration and experimentation major components of his practice. Recent projects include Dead Reckoning for Bay Area Now 7 at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, a residency with the Exploratorium and nest module design for the Cassin’s Auklet on Año Nuevo Island . At the University of Southern California Lynch studied with Ken Price, and later earned an MFA at Mills College with Ron Nagle. Together he and the Machine have produced over 1500 events, workshops and installations. He received his MFA in Visual Art from the California Institute of the Arts. - [Mary Clare Rietz](http://www.archive-project.com/product/mary-clare-rietz/) - Mary Clare Rietz grew up in Akron, Ohio, to the smell of burning rubber. At age 21, she knew she wanted to be a community organizer. At 29, she started making art for the first time. Now, her background in organizing combines with her art practice to fuel a keen interest in what she terms aesthetic action. Mary Clare engages with people and material to create objects, performances, and other participatory processes, often in response to dis-connects that exist and carry a power differential. With an aesthetic of relationship at its center, the work goes further, pointing to action that participants might choose in response to changes in thought or feeling that relational experiences might bring. At age 51, Mary Clare completed her MFA at the University of Cincinnati College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning (2016). Recipient of a Lannan Fellowship, a Howard Fellowship, the Kafka Prize for Best Fiction by an American Woman, the Bard Fiction Prize and other citations, she teaches in the UMass Amherst MFA program. Edie Meidav is a student of human bewilderment. In her first novel—about an American called Henry Gould trying to establish a utopian community in the British colony of Ceylon—she’s woven the blundering figure of a holy fool into a bristling tapestry of local life. The Far Field is historical fiction without a shred of nostalgia, and even its sometimes predictable plot is finally justified by Meidav’s scarifying emotional honesty and visceral sense of place. Also known by the stage name NapoleonSolo, he is a proficient rapper, beatboxer, and singer. Maddox also leads the live Hip-hop group IsWhat?! Formed in the fall of 1996, ISWHAT?! has shared bills and/or collaborated with Antibalas, Saul Williams, KRS ONE, The Herbaliser, Tumi & the Volume, Hocus Pocus, Authur H, The Roots, Brother Ali, James Blood Ulmer and others. With IsWhat?!, Napoleon has toured the United States and Europe; in 2007 the group performed with Archie Shepp in Italy. Mr. Shepp appreciated the sound & feeling of this concert that he offered to release it as “Phat Jam”, a new project on his label. Maddox’s work has been commissioned by universities, festivals and art institutions, which have presented him in several cities in France, England, Serbia, Slovenia and America. In 2009, Mr. Maddox was also sponsored by the US Embassy in Estonia for a series of workshops and concerts in 6 Estonian cities for Jazz Month. - [Christian Schmit](http://www.archive-project.com/product/christian-schmit/) - Christian Schmit is a sculptor creating scenes that depict the mysterious and at times, obsessive behavior of unseen characters. His dioramas grant the viewer a glimpse into private spaces, the kind of spaces occupied by obsessive types of people who spend their time building things without the thought of sharing their work with others. Relating to a character who work endlessly to build their magnum opus in their basement, whether writing a novel, constructing a railroad scene, writing music, Schmit’s work engages his own methodical behaviors as he sits at his table, night after night gluing cardboard and paper, constructing a model of a model. Christian Schmit is a graduate of Art Academy of Cincinnati where he currently teaches. He also instructs at the University of Cincinnati.

Progressive leadership of public art projects in Cincinnati, Ohio partnered with ArtWorks Cincinnati, resulting in 8 large-scale murals completed with the assistance of local artists and apprentices. Member of two collaborative artist groups making multi-media installations about nature, myth, and utopia, resulting in international film screenings and gallery exhibitions, museum exhibitions, and scholarly lectures. Solo studio research includes paintings, mixed media, sculpture, and installation, with a focus on drawing. - [Michael Stillion](http://www.archive-project.com/product/michael-stillion/) - Michael Stillion received his BFA from Columbus College of Art and Design, and his MFA from Indiana University in Bloomington. He has been the recipient of a Joan Mitchell Full Fellowship to attend the Vermont Studio Center, an Ohio Arts Council Grant for Individual Excellence, as well as a One Year Full Fellowship to attend the Roswell Artist-in-Residence program. - [Kim Krause](http://www.archive-project.com/product/kim-krause/) - Kim Krause is a Cincinnati native whose paintings have been included in more than 100 exhibitions both nationally and internationally, including eight solo exhibitions. The artist’s work has been purchased for numerous public and corporate collections including Atlantic Richfield, Cincinnati Art Museum, Chase Manhattan Bank, Federated national headquarters, Fidelity Investments, The Procter and Gamble Company, and the Federal Reserve Bank, among others. Krause has been awarded artist residencies at the Atlantic Center for the Arts in Florida; Rathausgalerie, Munich; The Cooper Union, New York; the Chateau, Rochefort-en-Terre, France; Spiro Arts, Park City, Utah, and The Santa Fe Art Institute in New Mexico. Krause earned his MFA from Bard College, New York. Krause is professor of Art at the Art Academy of Cincinnati and chair of the Department of Fine Arts. - [Kate Bonansinga](http://www.archive-project.com/product/kate-bonansinga/) - Kate Bonansinga is and professor and director of the Director of the School of Art, part of the University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP). She was founding director of Stanlee and Gerald Rubin Center for Visual Art at The University of Texas, El Paso where she curated many exhibitions and established an undergraduate minor in museum studies and taught courses in curatorial practice. She is in interested in museums as dynamic sites for learning, in the impact of art in gallery and non-gallery settings, and in the current methods that artists employ to make a difference in society and culture. Bonansinga is the author of “Curating at the Edge: Artists Respond to the U.S./Mexico Border” (University of Texas Press, 2014) and of a chapter in “Born of Resistance,” edited by Scott Baugh and Victor Sorell (University of Arizona Press, publication date TBA). She curated “Staged Stories: 2009 Renwick Craft Invitational” at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and since 2002 has served as a national art peer for the General Services Administration’s Art-in-Architecture program. - [Sean Oswald](http://www.archive-project.com/product/sean-oswald/) - Sean Oswald is an emerging artist living and working in Cincinnati Ohio who focuses primarily on painting and drawing. Before attending graduate school Sean apprenticed with an artist who taught him the tradition of “alla prima” painting in upstate New York. While the skills he learned from the apprenticeship continue to undergird Sean’s work, he now applies the language of painting to paint through personal and contemporary concerns. Sean holds a BA in Art Education from Miami University, an apprenticeship from the Carriage House Art Studio with the artist Garin Baker, and an MFA from the University of Cincinnati’s DAAP – College of Design, Architecture, Art & Planning. Vance has handled many local accounts including, The Cincinnati Art Museum, Newport on the Levee, The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, Summerfair Cincinnati, and consults with several local advertising agencies. Her expertise also includes marketing and creative strategy. Sara was appointed by former Governor Ted Strickland to sit on the Ohio Arts Council Board (2010-2014), and she currently sits on the Carnegie Visual and Performing Arts Board, ArtWorks (Past President and board chair) and is a trustee emeritus, The Neuberger Museum of Art in New York, Ohio Citizens for the Arts, Arts Midwest, and Chaine-Mondiale and Cancer Family Care as past and present board chair. Her previous board commitments have included The Contemporary Art Center as vice president, Cincinnati Art Museum as Acquisitions Chair, Enjoy the Arts, The March of Dimes, The Ronald McDonald House Charities, Ensemble Theater of Cincinnati and Equality Cincinnati. Sara attended Morehead State University, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts in Journalism, with an emphasis in public relations/advertising, graduating Cum Laude in 1984. She was a member of the Board Of Directors for the Advertising Club of Cincinnati from 1985-1992. Vance was the recipient of the “Rookie of the Year” in 1987. Represented by Romer Young Gallery, San Francisco, CA Amanda Curreri is an multi-disciplinary artist and educator. She presents personal and social histories towards public experiences of intersubjectivity. Informed by social activism and built within the vernacular of visual language, her work creates frameworks for rethinking power relationships. Curreri has recently exhibited at the Asian Art Museum, SF; Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, SF; Ortega y Gasset Projects, NY; and the Incheon Women’s Biennale, Korea. She is a recipient of a Joan Mitchell Foundation Fellowship (2009) and a SF Guardian Goldie Award (2010). Curreri holds an MFA from the California College of the Arts, a BFA from The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and a BA from Tufts University in Sociology and Peace & Justice Studies. Curreri is represented by Romer Young Gallery in San Francisco, California. Collaboration is also core to Curreri’s work and takes many forms. Curreri is part of the collaborative working-group, ERNEST.
